Synopsis: Reversing Obesity & Sleep Apnea Simultaneously

INTERPRETATION OF THE OVERNIGHT PULSE OXIMETRY TEST RESULTS OF Dr. RK

 

WHEN I LOST 40 POUNDS, MY BODY RESUMED NORMAL WEIGHT.
My Body Mass Index (BMI) dropped to perfectly normal value.
WHEN MY BODY RESUMED NORMAL WEIGHT, MY SLEEP APNEA DISAPPEARED!

As shown in the aforementioned table, when I was first diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, my overnight pulse oximtetry test done on 07-Feb-2015 showed that my desaturation index was 22 events/hr. When I repeated the test on 07-Apr-2015, my desaturation index went up to 28 events/hr, which means I would soon be diagnosed with severe sleep apnea (if the desaturation index is ≥ 30 events/hr, that indicates severe sleep apnea).

With severe sleep apnea, I knew that I could suffocate myself due to the blocked airway and could die in my sleep. It could happen any time if I live with negligence. I therefore took action and awakened the giant within myself. My extensive reading and research suggested me that "I need to lose weight fast." I was then committed to losing weight and created my very own weight-loss diet incorporating daily exercise (running on a treadmill every day). It was like an uphill battle. It was exactly like fighting against a devil because sleep apnea prevents weight loss. Even if I went to gym and ran on a treadmill twice a day, the stubborn fat refused to melt away for a long time.

But my further reading and research suggested me that I needed to do some adjustments to my diet and lower the calories being consumed from junk foods. I learned that when calories being burned by my body are more than the calories being consumed, I would lose weight. I then created a new weight-loss diet, by making drastic changes to my diet by incorporating whole foods only, and by removing all processed foods and refined foods. As a result, my weight started melting away day by day right in front of my eyes, and I accomplished my weight loss goal.

After losing 40 pounds of weight and 12 inches around the waist, naturally without ever using drugs or supplements, my weight dropped from 190 pounds to 150 pounds, my Body Mass Index (BMI) dropped from 30.5 (obese) to 24.1 (perfectly normal). The Oxygen Desaturation Index (ODI) from an overnight pulse oximetry test dropped from a high-risk 28 events/hr to a stunning 0.6 event/hr in 22 months, and I completely reversed my obstructive sleep apnea.

The CPAP therapy, being the best treatment available currently, controls sleep apnea and keeps the SpO2 level (percentage saturation of blood oxygen level) and desaturation index perfectly normal only during the time you wear the CPAP machine correctly and use it correctly. It is important to note here that CPAP therapy does not heal, cure or reverse sleep apnea. But weight loss gradually heals, cures and reverses obstructive sleep apnea.
 
However I must watch my weight constantly and prevent it from regaining through caution, care, self-discipline and willpower. As long as I maintain the normal body weight, and maintain normal body mass index (BMI), my obstructive sleep apnea should remain reversed for the rest of my life.

AUTHOR’S UPDATE

During 2015-2016, when I lost 40 pounds of my body weight and when my body resumed perfectly normal weight, I not only reversed my obesity but also simultaneously reversed my obstructive sleep apnea and my chronic insomnia. Immediately after I lost 40 pounds, I have slowly introduced the following changes to my daily diet routine and my lifestyle during the past 5 years (during 2016-2021):

(i) I have slowly introduced oven-baked skinless chicken, turkey or fish into my Egg White Omelet recipe.

(ii) I started eating my breakfast daily: one baked whole wheat pita bread after spreading a tablespoon of creamy organic coconut oil, and a cup of organic coffee.

(iii) I sometimes even replace my Egg-White Omelet with a home-cooked meal made from brown rice, rotisserie chicken (or fish), a variety of organic vegetables, greens, leafy vegetables, chickpeas, kidney beans and organic yogurt.

(iv) I started eating unsalted and dry-roasted cashews, walnuts, soaked almonds, blanched almonds, and protein bars as my in-between meal snacks on an irregular basis. I regularly eat organic Kamut puffs and organic fruits as my in-between meal snack to avoid being hungry.

(v) I sometimes even cheat on my diet, and eat deep-fried
French fries, hashbrowns,
samosas, spring rolls, and Oh Henry bars (which are my favorite snacks) once or twice a week.

(vi) I even started eating at a buffet (a heavy meal of all kinds of unlimited items of food including the dessert) in restaurants once every week or once every fortnight. Whenever I eat a heavy meal in a restaurant, I do not eat any other meals (except a few fruits) on that day. That means,
whenever I eat a heavy meal in a restaurant, I eat only "one meal" on that day.

(vii) However I never discontinued or skipped my daily exercise program, not even a day. Everyday, every single day (7 days a week), I go to gym and do 1 hour of treadmill, or at least 30 minutes of treadmill and 30 minutes of bike or other equipment.

Miraculously, my weight remained steady and normal at 150 pounds during the past 5 years (2016-2021). And I am confident that my weight will remain steady and normal for the rest of my life. I now know how to keep my weight perfectly normal and well controlled.


LESSON LEARNED:
As long as I carefully and responsibly keep my body weight perfectly normal, my obstructive sleep apnea would remain reversed.

Losing weight is an art. But if you are not artistic about it, you may end up regaining all the weight you have lost, even if you are workout savvy or a fitness guru. Many people lose weight working hard in the gym, but regain all the pounds they have burned within a few months just because of the lack of self-discipline.

If you are accustomed to eating out in restaurants, no matter how hard you workout in the gym, the fat in your belly increases unstoppably. Many of the restaurant foods are made from processed foods and refined foods. Processed foods are manufactured by adding preservatives, artificial colors and flavors including salt (sodium), MSG (monosodium glutamate), hydrogenated oils, fillers, sugars and sweeteners for a longer shelf life in the supermarkets.
Refined foods, mostly carbohydrates could trigger your food cravings, similar to the urge drug addicts experience. Carbohydrates spike blood sugar levels demanding increased insulin production from pancreas, which could in turn result in type 2 diabetes. A typical example is the white flour or all purpose white flour made from grains (mostly wheat, rice or both). The altered texture and flavor make the body crave more of it. That is why your body wants more and more processed foods and refined foods and manufactures fat in the belly.

JUNK FOODS are strategically manufactured using processed foods and refined foods, adding large quantities of sugar, salt, oil, fat and several other chemicals including artificial colors and flavors to boost our cravings, so we buy more and eat more. Junk foods sabotage our weight-loss efforts. By consuming whole foods and at the same time by eliminating processed foods and refined foods from your diet, you can very easily transform your body’s functionality within a few days, and even feel good about your health in general.
You can see results within days, and feel a lot better.
 The cravings for processed foods and refined foods can be abolished by tasting whole foods in every meal you consume throughout the day. Consuming whole foods is an easy task, but avoiding processed foods and refined foods is the most difficult task for many people. This book “Reversing Obesity” is all about the true story of a diabetic person who suffered from uncontrollable obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia due to severe body weight gained over years, and who struggled to lose weight for a long time because sleep apnea prevents weight loss. His extensive reading and research suggested him that “he must lose weight fast.” He then self-discovered his own weight-loss plan with which he successfully reversed his uncontrollable obesity,
obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia once and for all.

After going through tough time to lose weight:
(i) The author of this book "Reversing Obesity" self-discovered “A Recipe for Egg-White Omelet,” which occupied a major role in his weight-loss plan,
(ii) He started counting calories of every food item he has been consuming like a professional,
(iii) He started eating whole foods only by avoiding all processed foods and refined foods. He published all his whole foods recipes in this book so that others can benefit from them,
(iv) He started consuming the apple cider vinegar (ACV) properly 2 to 3 times a day,
(v) He started drinking 16 cups of the purified water (reverse osmosis water) per day,
(vi) He incorporated the daily exercise into his weight-loss plan, and started monitoring and recording calories being burned through exercise like a professional trainer,
(vii) He implemented the mathematical formula of Body Mass Index (BMI) into his weight loss plan, and started calculating, monitoring and recording his BMI once every week or even once every day like professional scientist,
(viii) He very neatly kept record of everything he has been doing daily like a scientific researcher.

Ultimately, he was victorious in lowering his BMI to perfectly normal by accomplishing perfectly normal body weight that matches his height, and the end-result was that he successfully, miraculously, and stunningly reversed his health disorders “uncontrollable obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia” once and for all. A Case Study presented in this book “Reversing Obesity” is indeed inspiring. The participant was a diabetic person who battled with chronic diabetes, uncontrollable weight gain, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia. When this participant started consuming whole foods by counting and controlling food calories precisely, stopped consuming processed foods and refined foods, consumed limited apple cider vinegar two or three time a day, exercised every day, and drank 8 to 16 cups of purified water per day, his belly fat started melting away day-by-day right in front of his eyes. The astonishing end-result was that he has fully reversed his obesity, obstructive sleep apnea and chronic insomnia.

The recipe of the Egg-White Omelet with whole foods presented in this book along with nutritional information caught my attention as it could be a “noteworthy information for all overweight and obese people” to achieve successful weight loss results. The book presents all ingredients of the Egg-White Omelet with their calories precisely calculated, making it a scientific weight loss method. “Egg-white omelet with 2 extra large organic eggs, organic veggies, organic flaxseed powder & spices” is reported to contain 371 calories, 22 g protein, 11.5 g fat and 44 g carbohydrate. The same kind of omelet if consumed in a restaurant could be loaded with a whopping 1000 to 1500 calories, which could automatically contribute to weight gain and food cravings.

This book inspired me to lose weight, and I did lose weight. After reading this book, I was inspired to become creative with my own ideas. I started counting food calories of everything I eat. This book is a GEM in teaching “how to count food calories.” I intentionally included items of zero fat content in my diet, which means I stopped consuming fat, but started consuming carbs and protein only. When I did that, within a few weeks, dramatic transformation took place, my body ate my own fat, and I lost weight. As a result, I reversed my obesity. After losing all the excess fat, I slowly introduced fat into my diet plan, and much to your surprise, I did not regain weight. My weight is now perfectly normal. In other words, this book inspired me to reverse my obesity.
